Universal Gear: HK

The newest location for the ever expanding Universal Gear chain is located in the heart of NYC's trendy urban neighborhood, Hell's Kitchen. The new 3,000 sq. ft. location, at 715 9th Ave at 49th St. has an industrial feel with vintage fixtures. UG:HK will join its sister store which is in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood on Eighth Avenue.

Launched at the start of May, UG:HK will launch it's grand opening on Friday May 18th. This party will be in association with XL Night Club, who will be hosting the after party.
When asked about Hell's Kitchen opening collection, Head Buyer Chord Bezerra, said "Our award-winning selection of contemporary men's clothing, accessories and lifestyle products are a reflection of the communities that surround and support us. And of course there will be your UG classics such as G-Star and Diesel but we are also bringing in a few collections that will be unique to this new store."

Along with Universal Gear classics like G-Star Raw & Diesel the Hell's Kitchen location will also carry 2(x)ist, Andrew Christian, Timoteo, Scotch & Soda, Cin2, Antony Morato, Ben Sherman and more of your favorite brands.

Founded in 1993, Universal Gear started as a small boutique in DC's Dupont Circle neighborhood and had a simple goal-to provide a fun and lively atmosphere staffed with friendly, helpful and knowledgeable salespeople who made customers feel comfortable and appreciated and to fill the store with a selection of great merchandise that represents "the best of" fashion from different designers. Nineteen years later the company continues this goal with the launch of UG:HK and starts a new chapter for the retail boutique.

Check out fashion guru turned internet celebrity, William Sledd.
In his latest video blog he talks about the do’s and don’ts in buying men’s denim, and can you guess which men’s denim retailer he mentions? And can you guess which denim he features? The exclusive Levi's in the Hiro wash, made especially for Universal Gear, Diesel Safado 8AR and the Diesel Zatiny 8AR.

Recently, WUSA9 (the CBS affiliate for the metropolitan Washington DC area) announced the 100 winners of the 2006 A-List awards. Between July 18th and September 8th, more than 1,300 businesses within the Washington DC Area entered the competition, and over 55,000 votes were collected in categories such as nightlife, fashion, great meals and more. Facing off against five other area retailers, we took home the award for Best Men's Jeans in Washington, DC!

The votes have been tallied and the results are in:
Universal Gear called Washington DC's best men's clothing store by the Washington Blade!
Every year the Blade holds a vote by its readers on everything from the best bars and clubs, to the best restaurants and gyms. Citing both our great location (1601 17th St, NW) and an amazing selection of jeans, Universal Gear is (once again in case you missed it...) Washington DC's best men's clothing store!

Well apparently we've now been branded sadists by Kenneth over at kennethinthe212. I feel like that's a somewhat inaccurate portrait of us over here at Universal Gear (well except for Ricardo that is).

We were recently mentioned in one of our favorite magazines, Details! The September issue highlighted aussieBum underwear available in our New York Store - 140 8th Ave.

I think I speak for all of my compatriots here at Universal Gear when I say that we LOVE underwear! Now I can finally say that I have found someone who appreciates a good pair of underwear as much as we do. Jay over at Undiesdrawer.com is a TRUE underwear afficionado! Undiesdrawer is a blog dedicated to all things in the world of men's underwear. While I was checking out his site the other day I noticed that he had actually mentioned our Underwear Sale to his readers.

While blog-surfing the other day I came across one blogger's particular appreciation of our latest imagery from our Fall 2006 Underwear Sale.
Kennethinthe212 is a peronal blog where Kenneth (a writer/editor in New York City) shares his views on everything from pop culture to politics and posts pictures that catch his eye.
Check out his follow-up post about our model Sean here.

We don't like to toot our own horns (oh who am I kidding, we LOVE to brag), but in this month's Time Out Chicago, we were voted best men's clothing store in a head to head contest!
In an article comparing two major parts of Chicago, Boystown and Andersonville, Time Out Chicago judged the worthiness of the area on several factors including men's clothing stores. While the challenger put up a good fight (we won), TOC cited our diverse casual wear selection (we won) with the brands like Diesel, Calvin Klein and Penguin as a great reason to shop with us (we won). The lynchpin however, was our expansive underwear selection (we won, we won, we won)!
Want to see what they're talking about? Click here to check out universalgear.com or if you are in the Chicago area, head down to the store at 3153 N. Broadway!
